And perhaps rather than asking yourself, which social media platform should I promote my business on, you should start with asking, is my brand story relevant and does it resonate with my market?

It’s no secret that SME’s have been hard hit by COVID-19 due to both supply-side and demand-side shocks. A survey conducted by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) has revealed that 42.2% of the country’s businesses have indicated that they have run out of financial resources to continue operating because of COVID-19. According to Sasfin, 60% of SME’s may close before the pandemic is over.

But let’s not blame CORONA for everything, South African SMME’s were already contending with a contracting economy, even before the pandemic hit. The South African economy recorded its third consecutive quarter of economic decline, falling by 2,0% in the first quarter of 2020 (StatsSA). So now, as business slowly begins to open up again, many SMME’s are going to need cold hard cash and access to market opportunities to get back and running again.

Accessing Funding: We will focus on getting your business the correct funding for its current position, we will look at short term funding options as well as more long term solutions. The aim of this event is to provide you with as much face time as possible with relevant funding bodies so you can ask the questions that are most important for your business.

Topic: The Future of Co-Working Spaces

After over 100 days of lockdown in South Africa, small businesses and entrepreneurs have been severely affected by harsh lockdown regulations. For those who been able to keep operating, many have shifted to a work-from-home format or have scaled down on their space requirements as office space is often one of the biggest expenses in an organisation.

According to the Global Coworking Space Growth Study by Coworking Resources, after analysing over 3,000 requests between February 2020 (pre-lockdowns) and May 2020 (post-lockdowns), space utilization is beginning to recover and shift toward private offices, longer-term contract durations and higher capacity (of desks needed). Coworking will become even more mainstream as more companies move towards a remote-first, way of work. In this session, we ask the question, what do the shifts and trends in co-working spaces mean for entrepreneurs and how should they be thinking about space in this new normal?

What will BBEE look like in the era of COVID-19? And how will it affect you as a small business?

Think about it, many businesses may now fall within the category of EME or QSE due to loss of revenue. Secondly, businesses may need to reprioritize their budgets and that may affect the implementation of the preferential procurement requirements, thirdly, a loss of profits by businesses will affect the percentage of net profit after tax which entities have to spend on enterprise development and supplier development. If we consider these fundamental shifts in business as we know it, how will we continue to effectively use BBBEE as a vehicle to address inequality in South Africa?

Join us as on Wednesday, 6th of May a 10:30, as we speak to Mrs Zodwa Ntuli, Commissioner of the BBBEE Commission (https://www.bbbeecommission.co.za ), to understand what their plans are around this issue, and what this means for entrepreneurs.

Are you finding business opportunities during COVID-19 and looking for funding options?

Although COVID-19 has had devastating impacts on SMME’s, some entrepreneurs are finding opportunities to provide essential services and other products outside of their scope or, scale up what they have already been providing. One way to acquire funding to serve this new ‘’essentials market’’ is through purchase order funding. Join us as we speak to Yolisa Jafta, Chief Operations Officer of The Peoples Fund, about how her organization is supporting entrepreneurs during this time through purchase order funding. We will also look at some of the adjustments they have made to their requirements in order to meet the essential services demand.

The Peoples fund is a purchase order funding collaboration between Brownsense Group (https://www.brownsensemarkets.co.za), The HookUp Dinner (http://www.thehookupdinner.com/), Sirdar Group & Paybook, (https://www.paybook.com/) which provides purchase order funding, for entrepreneurs.
